Custom Ao Dai – Hand – Painted & Tailor-Made at The Sun Art
There’s something quietly special about a custom ao dai made just for you — not pulled off a rack, but painted by hand or stitched to your own measurements. That’s what we do at The Sun Art, a small workshop in Ho Chi Minh City where every ao dai starts as a blank canvas and ends as something no one else owns.
We work with two kinds of clients, really. People who want one beautiful, one-of-a-kind piece for themselves. And businesses, schools, and event organizers who need many ao dai at once — for a uniform, a gift, a performance — without losing that handmade feel.
Hand-Painted Ao Dai
Every hand-painted ao dai we make is done brushstroke by brushstroke. No printing, no shortcuts. We paint on traditional ao dai, modern cuts, and even the plain white ones students wear — whatever shape you’re starting from.
What people usually ask us to paint
- Lotus flowers — by far our most requested design, and there’s a reason: it just feels quintessentially Vietnamese.
- Apricot and peach blossoms, roses, orchids — lovely for Tết or any festive occasion.
- Bronze drum motifs and brocade patterns — a favorite for companies giving gifts to international partners who want something that speaks to Vietnamese heritage.
- Portraits and landscapes — send us a photo, and we’ll paint it.
- Contemporary designs — for anyone who wants something a little bolder or more modern.
We use fabric specifically made for hand-painting — it holds color well and keeps the ao dai’s shape after painting — along with fabric-safe paint that won’t crack or fade after repeated washing.

Pricing depends on how detailed the design is and how many pieces you’re ordering. If you’re ordering ten or more — say, for a company or a school — we offer better rates for larger orders. Just reach out and we’ll work out a quote together.
Custom Tailoring
Beyond painting, we also tailor a custom ao dai from scratch to your measurements — traditional styles, modern cuts, the five-panel ngũ thân style, uniforms for events, plain white ones for students, and men’s traditional ao dai too. This isn’t alteration work; it’s built from the ground up to fit you.
How the tailoring process works
- We talk through style and fabric — depending on what it’s for, whether that’s an event, a uniform, or a gift.
- We take measurements — either in person at our studio, or by following a simple measuring guide if you’re not nearby.
- You approve the fabric and any painted design before we start sewing.
- We sew and finish the piece — larger orders are scheduled around our production calendar.
- Quality check and delivery.
How long it takes really depends on how many you’re ordering — a single piece moves faster than a large batch, which needs its own production schedule. Tailored uniforms are a nice fit for this, especially when you need several ao dai that look identical but still fit each person properly.

A Few Common Questions
How much does a painted or tailored ao dai cost?
It depends on the design’s complexity, the fabric, and how many you’re ordering. Get in touch and we’ll give you an honest quote — larger orders come with better pricing.
Do you sell ready-made ao dai?
No — everything we make is done to order, whether painted or tailored. We don’t keep a stock of ready-made pieces.

A single piece is usually quicker; larger orders need their own production schedule. Reach out and we’ll give you a realistic timeline.
Can you make matching ao dai for a school or company event?
Yes — this is actually one of the things we do most often, with pricing that works better the more you order.
